Thumbelina

Thumbelina was born from a flower and was as big as a thumb. Because of her beauty, she is kidnapped by a toad. She manages to escape, but gets kidnapped again, this time by a beetle who wishes to marry her. Again she escapes, and lives alone in the woods, until she meets a friendly old wood mouse. All day long, Thumbelina sings beautifully and tells engaging stories. The neighbour of the mouse, a blind mole falls, in love with Thumbelina. The mole hates the sun, and also birds that sing.  Thumbelina does however befriend a swallow, who sings beautiful songs for her. When the swallow gets ill, Thumbelina does not hesitate to take care of her musical friend, although she does make sure the mouse and the mole do not notice. The next year, Thumbelina is married to the mole, and is forced to live underground. Next winter, when Thumbelina is very unhappy, she hears the sound of the swallow again! She hops on his back, and they both leave for the south. In the south she marries the flower king, a lovely boy the same size as Thumbelina. They live happily ever after.
